You are the treasure of perfect virtues,

A source fulfilling all desires;

To you, the great Translator Marpa,

I bow down with deepest reverence.

The advisor, the mediator, and the go-between

These three cause discord and pain.

He who wants to be free and neutral should remain

Silent like a mute and take no sides.

Property, kinsmen, and one’s native land

These three imprison one in Samsara’s realms.

He who would cross the river wretchedness

Should cut relentlessly attachment’s chain.

Self-conceit, trickery, and pretense

These three drag one down to lower Realms.

He who would reach a higher plane and the Path of Liberation,

Should keep his mind upright and straightforward.

Talking, discussion, and scholarship

These three cause jealousy and pride.

He who would practice Holy Dharma,

Should humble and modest be.

The kitchen, [household] work, and cares

These three spoil a yogi’s meditation.

He who would uphold his innate Wisdom,

Should strengthen his self-respect.

The Master, the disciple, and the learning

These three burden and distract the mind.

He who would meditate in solitude,

Should avoid them all.

Sorcery, magic, and To Tse, these three

Doom a yogi to evil influence.

He who would consummate the Dharma practice,

Should remember the singing bird of Jolmo

I have now sung of the seven

Demerits against the Dharma

And their seven antidotes,

Acquired through my own experience.

With this merit I hope that soon

You will attain Buddhahood.

완전한 덕의 보고요,

모든 소원 성취케 하는 근원이신

위대한 역경사 마르빠님께

깊은 경외심으로 예배 드립니다.

조언자와 중개자, 참견자는

불화와 고통을 일으키나니,

중립하여 자유로우려면

벙어리처럼 침묵하고 편을 들지 말진저!

재물과 친척과 고향은

그대를 윤회 세계에 가두나니

참담한 윤회 강물 건너려면

집착의 사슬을 미련 없이 끊어야 하리.

자존심과 속임수와 위선은

그대를 하천한 세계로 끌어내리나니,

높은 세계, 해탈 대도 이르려면

그대, 마음을 곧추세워야 하네!

말하기, 논쟁, 그리고 학식은

시기와 자만을 불러일으키나니,

거룩한 진리를 수행하려면

그대, 겸손하고 소박해야 하리라.

부엌일과 가사와 근심거리는

명상가의 수행을 방해하나니,

본생의 지혜를 지속할면

자존을 강화해야 하네.

스승과 제자와 가르침은

마음을 어지럽히고 짐 지우나니,

적정처에서 고요히 명상하려면

이들을 떠나야 하네.

주문과 마술과 액막이 굿은

수행자를 악의 힘에 노예되게 하나니,

진리 수행을 완성하려면

노래하는 죄모 새를 기억할진저!

체험에서 얻은

일곱 가지 경계와 처방을

미라래빠는 노래하였네

바라노니 이 공덕으로

그대는 어서 붓다의 경지를 성취하렴!

Though, Father Guru, you appear

To have entered into Nirvana,

In truth you dwell in the Pure Land of the Sambhogakaya,

Doing benevolent deeds for all

Sentient beings in the Three Realms.

To you, Translator Marpa, I apy

Sincerest veneration.

Dewashun, Shiwa Aui, Ngan Tson Dunba,

And my well-endowed disciples here assembled

Who are dear to me as my own sons,

Have asked me for instructions on meditation.

In reply I sing of the Ten Essentials.

It is important to know

That the rainbow Buddha-Body

Is void yet manifesting.

It is important to know

That devils and ghosts are non-existent;

Their magic forms are merely

Conjurations of one’s mind.

It is important at all times to have

The greatest veneration

For the gracious Jetsun Guru

It is important to know

That one should renounce

Endless worldly affairs.

It is important to work hard without distraction

For the warm and blissful Experiences

Of the Prana and Nadi practices.

It is important to have a strong will to unite

The combining practice of Dream Yoga

And the Yoga of Illusory Body.

It is important to work on the Beyond-symbol meditation

For the naked, illuminating Essence

It is important to note the Cutting-through instruction

For the All-manifesting Voidness.

It is important to have pity and kindness

Toward unenlightened sentient beings.

It is important to have a free-from-fear-and-hope conviction

Of the non-arising Dharmakaya of Self-mind.

My dear sons, these are

The important things that you

Should bear in mind and practice.

아버지 스승이시여,

임은 열반에 드신 것으로 보이지만

보신(報身) 정토에 상주하시어

삼계 모든 중생 위해

요익행(饒益行)을 이루시나니

역경사 마르빠시여, 예배 드립니다.

데와쫑, 시와외, 갠종뙨빠여!

친자식처럼 사랑스럽고

근기가 무르익은 제자들이 이렇게 모여

명상의 가르침을 내게 청하니

그대들에 응하여 노래하리라, 열 가지 요체를.

무지개 같은 부처님 몸은

텅 비었지만 현현하나니

이를 아는 것이 요체이네.

악마와 유령들은 비실재하나니

이를 아는 것이 요체이네.

마술의 형체들은 다만 마음이 만들어 낸 허깨비일 뿐이네.

어느때라도 자비로운 스승에게

한없는 경의를 품는 것이 요체이네.

끝없는 세속 잡사를 버려야 하나니

이것을 아는 것이 요체이네.

쁘라나와 나디 수행으로

내부열과 지복을 체험하매

동요치 않고 정진해야 하나니

이것이 요체이네.

몽환행(夢幻行)과 환신행(幻身行)을

‘하나’로 만들고자

강한 의지를 지녀야 하나니

이것이 요체이네.

있는 그대로 빛나는 본질을 위해서는

상징을 초월한 명상을 수행해야 하나니

이것이 요체이네

일체의 현현 공(顯現空)을 증득함에는

능단(能斷) 교의를 체득해야 하나니

이것이 요체이네.

깨닫지 못한 중생을 향해

자비심을 지녀야 하나니

이것이 요체이네.

진아심의 불생법신(不生法身)에 대하여

희망과 두려움 떠난 확신을 지녀야 하나니

이것이 요체이네.

사랑하는 아들들아,

마음속에 깊이 간직하여

수행의 요체로 삼을진저!

마더 테레사 수녀가 봉사했던 인도 캘커타의 어린이집 벽에는 이런 글이 있었다고 합니다

       "People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered.

       Forgive them anyway.

       If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.

       Be kind anyway.

       If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies.

       Succeed anyway.

       If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you.

       Be honest and frank anyway.

       What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight.

       Build anyway.

       If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous.

       Be happy anyway.

       The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow.

       Do good anyway.

       Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough.

       Give the world the best you've got anyway.

        You see, in the final analysis,

        It is between you and God;

        It was never between you and them anyway"

      사람들은 곧잘 비이성적이고 비논리적이고 자기중심적이죠.

       그래도 그들을 용서하세요

       당신이 친절을 베풀면, 사람들은 당신이 이기적이며 다른 꿍꿍이가 있다고 비난할지 

      몰라요.

       그래도 친절하세요.

       당신이 성공한다면, 당신에겐 몇 명의 가짜 친구와 또 몇 명의 진짜 적이 생길 것입니다.

       그래도 성공하거라.

       당신이 정직하고 솔직하다면, 사람들이 너를 속일지 모릅니다.

       그래도 정직하고 솔직하세요.

       당신이 몇 년을 걸려 지은 것을 누군가 하룻밤 새에 무너뜨릴 수도 있습니다.

       그래도 지으세요.

       당신이 평온과 행복을 찾는다면, 사람들은 당신을 시샘할지 모릅니다.

       그래도 행복하세요.

       당신이 오늘 베푼 선행을 곧잘 사람들은 내일이면 잊곤 합니다.

       그래도 선한 일을 하세요

       이 세상에 당신이 가진 최고를 준다하여도 세상은 그것으로 만족하지 않을 겁니다.

       그래도 당신이 가진 최고를 세상에 주세요.

       인생의 마지막이 오면

       그것은 당신과 사람들 사이에 일어났던 일이 아니고

       그대와 하나님 사이에 있는 일임을 알게 될 것이다

      이 시는 'Anyway 그럼에도 불구하고'란 제목으로 

      이 시의 원 저자는 미국의 Kent M. Keith(1949)라는 미국의 작가라고 하네요. 

      '인생의 마지막이 오면... 그대와 하나님 사이의 일임을 알게 될 것이다'란 마지막

     구절이 우리가 살아있는 동안 왜 자신의 영혼을 순수하게 가꾸며 인생을 착하게

     살아가야 하는지에 대한 명백한 이유가 되고 살아가면서 신에 대한 믿음과 선행의

     신조를 끝까지 지키려는 희망이자 위로의 말씀으로 와닿습니다
